The plan to save more than 1% of the cost of the Generational Theft Act 2009 annually.
Which means of course it could be paid off in less than one hundred years, or less than the time most think it wil take, which is an ill defined grandchildrens grand children will pay it off, or five generations.
CONgress (to be distinguished from PROgress) wants Wall Street to run more efficiently. The free market tends to do that anyway to a degree, but I see the point the CONgress pinheads are making now that they have decided to Socialize the country.
But, I submit that CONgress should lead by example in this area of efficiency, downsizing, and doing more with less.
To lead the way in this climate of austerity and save enough to pay for perhaps 1% of the most recent Stimulus/Socialization/PorkButt Bill which is now law, the following changes should be enacted either voluntarily by CONgress or involuntarily by dictate of the American Voters.
First and foremost:
The Congress consists of 100 Senators and 435 Representatives. Downsizing by 50% over the course of six years.
The redistricting made necassary by the downsizing should be handled by discretion of the voting public, not gerrymandered by any elected or appointed officials. 435 / 2 = 217.5 It might be best to leave it to the voters to elect either a) one full Representative, b) rip one in half or c) just use 217.
I suggest plan b, since it will detract from the field of candidates those who aren't truly interested in the job for the right reasons.
The plan then is to reduce the staff allotments by 25% for the remaining CONgressional Critters.
That will leave only 267 members of CONgress to cause problems and pass useless laws restriciting the freedoms we do still have.
The savings in base pay at that point will be $44,273,600 annually for the Non-Members of CONgress.
The savings in staff costs would be approximately $433.4 million each year since the House of Ill Repute spends roughly $1.3 million per member on staff ( 218 x 1.3 = $283.4 million savings) and the Senate spends roughly $3 million per member on staff ( 50 x3 = $150 million)
With the further reduction in costs associated with the 25% staff reductions:
House of Ill Repute: Instead of $1.3 million per member, it will be $975,000 per member for a savings of $69.55 million each year ($282.1 million - $212.55 million)
In the Sin of the Senate chamber:
Insteadd of $150 million (@ $3million per member x 50)
It would be $2.25 million per member x 50 for a savings of $37.5 million
Total staff reduction cost savings annually?
$433.4 million + $107.05 million = $540.45 million
Another side issue in savings will be CONgressional earmarks legislational graft.
Each year approximately $15 Billion is spent on pet projects for CONgressional Critters.
Reducing the number of CON Critters is a nifty 50 reduction amounting to $7.5 Billion in annual savings at the end of six years.
The total savings in this plan at the end of six years is $8.04045 Billion dollars annually, or just a bit more than 1% of the Porkulus and Generational Theft Act of 2009
The last issue to deal with is the retirement problem in CONgress. If they spend a single term in office they get full retirement. That amounts to a figure very close to the actual salary of a sitting Congressional Critter.
So a requirement that they serve a total of 30 years in CONgress to get a retirement would help with extended costs down the road.
BUT, removing their retirement entirely would be a better idea, they could get signed up for Social Security and put all of the money (yours and mine) they paid in to their retirement accounts (if they actually do that) in to the Social Security Fund and then be ready for retirement at age 70 or 72.
Eliminating the CONgressional barber, hairstylists, banks, shoe shiners, etc. etc... might lend itself to an understanding that the CONgress is not really the New American Aristocracy, but instead are actually just well paid public servants.
I've now woken up from my dream and will return to reality.
