On Wednesday Colombian
authorities announced finding more than thirty kilos of "impoverished" uranium along a road leading to a southern district of the capital Bogota.
The Colombian Defence Ministry has announced the uranium as having a connection to information on the computer of FARC guerrilla leader "
Paul Reyes" who was killed in a cross border raid into Ecuador March I of this year. That raid sparked a short lived international tiff between Columbia and Venezuela with Ecuadorian politicians providing angry outbursts too.
The uranium was touted as being in excess of 30 kilograms. The discovery was aided by the information from two informants who lead the Defence Ministry authorities to the site. The laptop computer belonging to guerrilla leader Paul Reyes was reported to have held emails suggesting FARC was in the market for the purchase of up to 50 kilograms of material.
The price for the material was believed to be between US$ 1.5 million and US $2.5 million per kilo.
FARC was not apparently in the market for the uranium as a weapon for it's own armed revolt against the government of Columbia, but was interested in re-selling the material on the international market to finance the fight against Bogota.
This is not the first report of or find of uranium material in Columbia this year. In February of this year another cache of the low grade material was found in a northern Bogota. Also on March 16, 2001 six hundred grams of enriched uranium were found in a neighborhood of Bogota.
Tests are being conducted to attempt to find a country of origin for the material found most recently.
These finds of uranium material whether low grade or enriched seem to bode ill for the civilized nations of the world. The advent of nuclear terrorism in place of homicide bombers wearing explosive belts with embedded shrapnel is a far leap into a new dimension of terror.
The use of even low grade nuclear material in a "
dirty bomb'' can lead to the deaths of many thousands of citizens in a population. The use of enriched uranium coupled with the expertise required can reduce an area affecting millions of people in the crowded cities of South America or North America.

The solution to a piece of this problm is closed borders. Tightly closed borders, tight like a bulls butt at fly time borders. Then, we ned to track down every last mothers son of the muslims in this country and make them register as foregin agents, and the muslim mothers too.
