Update # 2 Saturday April 18 2009 was the Ist Annual Bobby Rapp Motorcycle ride in honor of Sgt Bobby rapp with the funds going to a scholarship fund for area students.
Bobby will be remembered far longer than many of us who have lived longer, and he will be a testament to the young adults who are awarded the scholarships.
Update on 3/21/08: The turn out for Sgt Bobby Rapp's final ride was enormous, Vets from all over Northern California showed up, The Sonora High School classes were let out for 45 minutes to allow the H.S students who cared to (most of them) to line the street with themselves and flags, and Sonora Elementary School lined another section of the procession route. From my viewpoint it appeared as if about half of the County had shown up for the procession. The entire processional route was lined with yellow ribbons by that time and the Downtown area still is!
Bobby Rapp was honored by his community. This community was honored to have a man of his nature as a Patriot Son.
Army Sgt. Bobby Rapp of the 82nd Airborne was a hero. This post is not an attempt to eulogize that young man. I will leave that to the people who knew him much better than I did, who never personally met him.
This does happen to be all about the differences between two communities though. The difference specifially between Bezerekley California and Sonora California. The differences in the size of the two cities is considerable, 101,555 (and going down) vs 4,648 (and climbing) (Berkeley and Sonora respectively)
The differences though are deeper than mere size, dominant architectural themes, U.C. Berkeley and the other surface issues. The difference is how do the people of Berkeley differ from the people of Sonora? I have spent some time looking at both cities now. I grew up in the East Bay Area and was a frequent devotee of the sights and sounds of Berkeley while I was in High School, I have been at or near Sonora for twenty six years now.
The communities of the two cities though have nothing in common at all, the people of the two communities exist as if from different planets. As if they were definitely in opposing countries.
Berkeley wants the military Recruiters to take a hike and not come back. The City of Berkeley renounced that decision only at the threat of losing Federal Pork Barrel money to keep their little homeostasis perking along. The City of Bezerkeley has a history of being disruptive and anti war from the days of the Viet Nam War until today with the current anti war crowd. The difference being that now that same crowd from the sixties is in power at City Hall. So instead of sit ins and demonstrations in the street ad nauseum they simply pass resolutions at the Council meetings to dishonor the men and women in uniform. The same men and women who fight to preserve the right of those butt monkeys in Bezerkeley to protest and be idiots intent on aiding and abetting the enemies of this Nation by offering moral support to our enemies.
Sgt Bobby Rapp was one of those young men. Sgt Bobby Rapp died in Afghanistan on March 3 2008 defending against an attack on a government building.
The difference in the two cities is this. In the City of Sonora, the death of Sgt Bobby Rapp was given front page coverage. The local paper - The Union Democrat gave over not just an obituary notice to Bobby, he received coverage on three separate days so far. In today’s paper, the paper has a full page article on who he was as a child, as a young man, and finally as a Soldier. Another page of the paper is devoted to a map of the funeral procession, a procession through the City of Sonora eventually winding up at the Sierra Bible Church outside of Sonora. The procession route has been lined with yellow ribbons since the day after the official notice was given to the parents of Bobby. The City streets will be closed down entirely throughout the procession route for as long as needed. The support from the community is total.
Even the local anti war crowd have taken a hiatus from making any noise about the war. For those in this community it's not about the larger issue of whether the War on Jihad is right or wrong, it does happen to be all about a local boy who went to war in defense of his Nation and is now coming home for the final time.
All differences of political persuasion have been set aside for now. The community for a time is acting as one entity to Honor the Fallen.
I believe that Bobby would disagree with me on this but I do not for one second believe that the City of Berkeley or the Code Pink Freaks deserves the protections afforded by the sacrifices of the Heroes of this Nation. Wrong thinking perhaps and I will likely get over it at some point and need to recant that statement. But right now I can say it and it feels OK to do that.
I close with a quote from a "just in case" letter Bobby wrote to his parents shortly before his death.
"Let the world know I died doing what I love and dying for my country is the greatest honor I could ever receive" Sgt Bobby Rapp US Army.
From the ISV Bible:
1Jo 3:16
This is how we have come to know love: Christ gave his life for us. We, too, ought to give our lives for our brothers.
For those who stop by here I have a request, you see I never met Sgt. Bobby Rapp in person. There was something about this young man which appears to have touched every person he came in contact with. What was it?
If you knew Bobby, I would really enjoy knowing more about him. If you can leave a comment to give me a clue It would be appreciated.
For now, all thats left is to say thank you and God's speed to another American Hero who has fallen.
And Thank You to all of the Men and Women who are serving or have served in the Military. Your sacrifice is noted, and it is appreciated.
